IICRC - Commercial Drying Specialist (CDS) - 2 CEC’s
Commercial Drying Specialist (CDS) is an advanced drying concepts and management course. The focus of this class is on commercial, industrial, and multi-unit residential buildings. The goal of this course is to teach students the composition of commercial structures, advanced inspection techniques, advanced psychrometric charting, and the details required to manage a large drying project. Concepts are derived from the theories and concepts expressed in the ANSI/IICRC S500-2006 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration. These events usually include a hands-on exploration of large desiccant equipment in conjunction with supplementary electrical generation.  Students shall receive a copy of the current edition of the Leadership in Restorative Drying reference book. The industry's first and only "triple" workbook approved for use in the IICRC WRT, ASD and CDS courses. This book is also recommended reading material for those that wish to attain their ACAC CSDR and CSDS certifications. (See www.acac.org ) (Suggested Retail: $200) A typical student is an improved or novice project manager. NOTE: While advanced psychrometry / enthalpy and large commercial equipment are heavily explored in this class, this course is not intended for restorative drying technicians. This course is designed for those who wish to improve their project management skills on commercial drying projects.

Certification: IICRC Commercial Drying Specialist. (CDS)

Prerequisite: WRT.  Special note to Participants: Commercial drying projects frequently have many more potential hazards and safety risks that are not generally encountered on residential projects. These hazards may include but not be limited to higher voltages, confined spaces, energized machinery, hazardous chemicals, heavy equipment and forklifts. The CDS course is not intended to be a health and safety course, nor will it cover all of the potential hazards that may be encountered on commercial projects. It is required of participants to comply with all applicable local, state/provincial and national safety rules and regulations. The participant is strongly advised to research and complete appropriate training programs (e.g. HST, OSHA 10-hour, Canadian HST) prior to participating in the CDS course.

Length: 5 days

IICRC - Upholstery Fabric Technician (UFT)
The Upholstery Fabric Technician Course extensively covers all aspects involved in upholstery cleaning from its construction through the finest details of fabric cleaning and restoration. Emphasis is stressed on higher end fabrics and problem solving. Extensive time is spent on hands-on cleaning and procedures. Leather cleaning is a separate course offered by some IICRC Approved Schools.

IICRC - Carpet Cleaning Technician (CCT)
This course is oriented to the residential carpet cleaner. It covers all information in great detail needed to clean and restore residential carpets. Students are taken to a complete journey thru a carpet’s life cycle, from inception as a filament to carpet needing to be cleaned and restored. Time is dedicated to problem solving and presenting time saving procedures while stressing performance quality and service. There is time set aside for hands on carpet cleaning, as well as hands on spot and stain removal.

Council Certified Structural Drying Remediator / Supervisor
The Council-certified Structural Drying Remediator (CSDR) and the Council-certified Structural Drying Supervisor (CSDS) perform water damage restoration services.  For example, a CSDR or CSDS can safely mitigate water losses resulting from floods, fires, hurricanes and other disasters as well as broken pipes and water mains.  These professionals have verified knowledge of the principles, techniques, equipment and regulations relevant to structural drying as described in widely published industry texts and accredited standards.
CSDRs and CSDCs posses verified field experience conducting structural drying projects in one or more of the following settings:

  • Single and multi-family residences
  • Offices and commercial buildings
  • Industrial structures
  • Government facilities
  • Schools and public buildings
  • Healthcare facilities

To earn the Council-certified Structural Drying Remediator (CSDR) or Council-certified Structural Drying Supervisor (CSDS) designations, the candidate must:

  • Demonstrate verifiable field experience in structural drying. (two years for a CSDR candidate; eight years for a CSDS candidate)
  • Pass a rigorous examination based on broad industry knowledge rather than a course curriculum
  • Earn the unanimous approval of the CSDR or CSDS certification board
  • Re-certify every two years
  • Participate in 20 hours of professional development activities each year
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards

The CSDR and CSDS certifications are pending accreditation by the Council for Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB), a nationally recognized independent accreditation body.  ACAC certifications are the ONLY designations in the water damage restoration field to apply for CESB accreditation.

The Required Body of Knowledge:
The effective practice of structural drying requires knowledge of a variety of subjects related to the building sciences. For certification purposes, the candidate for the CSDR designation must demonstrate familiarity with the basic concepts and reference materials of the industry, such as those summarized in the following list.

American Council for Accredited Certification, Code of Conduct (www.acac.org)
ANSI/IICRC, Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration S500, 3rd edition (Vancouver, WA: IICRC, 2006) -- Standard section only.

ACAC CSDR / CSDS Preparatory Course
The RLI offers what is usually a one day event that follows one of the IICRC restorative drying courses listed above, (WRT, ASD, CDS) this education opportunity is unique. The instructor of this course:

  • Is NOT “approved” or screened by the ACAC
  • Does NOT know what the exam questions are
  • Does NOT proctor the exam
  • Does NOT participate in any revenue received by the certification organization (ACAC)

Further, the student is not required to sit in a class in order to challenge the exam. If the student feels prepared to challenge the exam, they may do so without any tuition whatsoever.

As a result of complying with these (and other) criteria, the CESB approves qualified students as being “certified”. (Compared to other organizations offering “certificate courses”)

The RLI’s ACAC CSDR / CSDS Preparatory Course is therefore a loosely structured event that encourages open dialogue between instructor and student(s) and explore many of the commonly accepted theories promoted within the restorative drying industry worthy of re-consideration. This candid and relaxed dialogue lends to frank discussions that bring logic and scientifically sound explanations to the restorative drying professional’s strategic planning skills. This is truly a nice polishing touch to compliment an IICRC certificate course.
